Mirenco Helps Iowa Transit System Earn Environmental Awards

RADCLIFFE, Iowa – Mirenco, Inc., (OTCBB: MREO) and its DriverMax technology have contributed a significant role in the ongoing success of the transit system in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Five Seasons Transportation and Parking recently was awarded two Environmental Excellence awards from Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack. The transit system earned the Special Recognition in Air Quality and Special Recognition in Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy awards. Five Seasons also earned the Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy awards in 1990 and 1995.

Bill Hoekstra, transportation and parking director for Five Seasons, said he is proud of the environmental awards. However, Hoekstra said the biggest reward comes through the clean, efficient, and low-cost operation of the bus system. “We are operating our transit system with 1978 diesel buses that are among the lowest emitting buses in the country,” he said.

Five Seasons earned its awards through a combination of innovative technology from Mirenco and the use of renewable fuels, including biodiesel and alcohol. Hoekstra credits Mirenco’s DriverMax technology with helping the bus system operate with low emissions and high fuel efficiency.

Each diesel bus in the fleet is equipped with DriverMax, a programmable throttle delay system that significantly reduces emissions and improves fuel efficiency by delivering only as much fuel as the engine can use.

The DriverMax system, which has been used in Cedar Rapids for more than a decade, can make a big impact in fuel savings and reduced emissions. Five Seasons saves an estimated 780 gallons of fuel annually for each bus equipped with DriverMax, Hoekstra said.

“The tendency of the a bus driver is to immediately push the accelerator to the floor. That’s hard on the engine, transmission, and passengers. DriverMax helps the driver be more efficient and prevents fuel from going out the exhaust pipe,” he said.

Mirenco CEO Dwayne Fosseen said Five Seasons’ results could be achieved in transit systems throughout the country. “Mirenco congratulates Five Seasons Transportation and Parking for its environmental awards. We also commend them for extending the life of their buses while continuing to protect the environment,” Fosseen said.
