Iowa's Bus Emissions Education Program Reduces Tailpipe Emissions

RADCLIFFE, IA—August 30, 2002—Two Iowa school districts have reported significantly reduced bus fleet emissions as a result of Iowa’s Bus Emissions Education Program (BEEP). Indianola Community School District has reduced overall fleet emissions by 21% and Hubbard-Radcliffe Community School District reports a 36% reduction in tailpipe smoke.

The Bus Emissions Education Program is a five year project to make Iowa’s school buses the cleanest and best maintained fleet in the nation, and educate Iowa’s school students on the science of vehicle tailpipe emissions and effects on the environment. BEEP is a partnership among School Administrators of Iowa, the Iowa Departments of Education and Natural Resources, the Iowa Pupil Transportation Association, and Mirenco, Inc.

In the program, Mirenco, Inc., an emission testing and combustion management company, tests emission levels at the same time the buses are undergoing state inspections. Information from the first round of testing has been distributed to all of Iowa’s school districts. The data is now being used by transportation directors to make their school buses run cleaner, save fuel, and last longer.

Indianola’s maintenance director, Danny Thede, uses the tailpipe emission data to establish baseline performance levels within the school bus fleet and to track how much it changes as it ages. “This is an indication as to how well the engine combusts the fuel demanded of it.” Thede said.

After receiving tailpipe emission data from BEEP, Dorance Hefte, Superintendent of the Hubbard-Radcliffe Community School District (Radcliffe, IA), decided to conduct engine maintenance on the vehicles cited as needing attention based on increased emission levels.

The BEEP data helped Hefte identify a fuel injector problem. “We believe this may have avoided costly repairs and down time in the future.” Hefte commented, “Furthermore, by making these repairs, we are producing fewer emissions into our environment.”
