Mirenco Successfully Uses GPS to Control Vehicle
Mirenco Continues Innovation Cycle With Successful
Proof of EconoCruise in Iowa
A technological breakthrough by an Iowa company now
effectively uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to control vehicle speed,
fuel mileage, and engine exhaust emissions.
When installed on new or used vehicles, the patented EconoCruiseTM, developed by
Iowa based Mirenco Corporation, operates the vehicle throttle for maximum fuel
mileage and emission control.
The new unit was demonstrated September 15, 1999 when a truck and trailer from
TMC Transportation of Des Moines made the 207-mile trip from Kansas City to Des
Moines on a route previously programmed for the new Mirenco GPS-EconoCruise. The
vehicle successfully made smart fuel mileage and emission decisions that
precisely position the vehicle throttle well ahead of the vehicle by using
real-time GPS satellite technology as it traveled over Interstate 35.
Smart throttle position decisions by EconoCruise translate into big savings and
less air pollution for trucking companies and automobile owners, especially when
the intelligent cruise control is installed on fleet vehicles. The applications
of EconoCruise will impact air quality, vehicle maintenance, and fuel costs of
businesses and individuals in the U.S. and abroad.
“Over the course of a million-mile life span of a truck, even a tiny increase in
fuel mileage makes a big difference,” states Dr. Wayne Merrell, dean of
mechanical technology at Des Moines Area Community College. Merrell worked
closely with Mirenco to monitor demonstration sites of transits using Mirenco
products.
The Iowa Department of Economic Development has also been a valuable resource
for Mirenco. “In many areas around the world pollution is a major problem, so I
think EconoCruise has great potential, “ comments Peggy Kerr, a South America
specialist with the Iowa DED who has helped develop markets in Mexico.
Mirenco was one of six Iowa companies represented on a March trip to Mexico that
Kerr coordinated for Iowa companies in establishing markets there. Because smog
is a major problem in several large cities in Mexico, the emission control
features of EconoCruise should be an asset in places like Mexico City and
Guadalajara. The EconoCruise is already patented in Mexico and Canada.
“If Mirenco can be successful in Mexico City, that alone will be helpful in
opening up doors in other cities, “Kerr observes. “I think the company has lots
of international potential because in many areas around the world pollution and
high fuel prices are major problems.”
