Mirenco Successfully Demonstrates World's First GPS Directed Cruise Control
Mirenco's EconoCruise® Makes Successful, Historic Debut
On September 15, 1999, departing from the DOE Kansas City Missouri Plant,
an Iowa-based TMC tractor-trailer equipped with Mirenco's new EconoCruise® began
its historic journey to Des Moines, Iowa to become the first vehicle ever to
travel the interstate freeway using a new intelligent cruise control that
utilizes GPS (Global Positioning System). The satellite technology assisted the
EconoCruise® processing unit to control fuel mileage and engine exhaust
emissions over the 207-mile distance. The journey started at 9:30 a.m. from the
DOE facility and head north on Interstate 35. The tractor-trailer arrived at its
final destination, the State Capitol Building in Des Moines, Iowa at 1:35 p.m.
EconoCruise®, patented by Dwayne Fosseen, President of Mirenco, Inc. and further
developed by DOE Kansas City Plant, was one step in a DOE CRADA / DriverMax
development program with Fosseen that began in early 1997. Many DriverMax units
have been successfully installed on public transit buses and other stop-and-go
applications since late 1997. The new EconoCruise® is a further enhancement of
the DriverMax. The basic problems of electronically controlling a vehicle
throttle and momentum using Global Positioning Satellites for sustained
interstate and highway travel were solved in the new Mirenco / DOE Kansas City
Plant EconoCruise® GPS model.
Design Features
Unlike a standard cruise control found on vehicles today, the EconoCruise®
system can recognize and prepare for road grade miles ahead of the vehicle. This
ingenious system will assist fleets and private vehicle operations in
controlling vehicle fuel mileage, engine exhaust emissions, and maintenance
costs. The intelligent cruise control will allow the not as talented driver to
be as competitive with the best.
To operate the EconoCruise®, all the driver has to do is switch on the system
and the GPS satellite system will tell the EconoCruise® processing unit in real
time where the vehicle is located on a highway or interstate and the vehicle
speed. Then the unit will compare this information to its stored memory and
begin feeding optimal throttle position information to the engine.
GPS/EconoCruise® is simple to install and adaptable to all vehicles around the
world. Operation of EconoCruise® has a similarity with present day cruise
controls in the fact the vehicle driver can override the EconoCruise® if a
situation arises by applying pressure to the brake pedal or increase vehicle
acceleration by applying more throttle.
