This week I will focus on a Mirenco GPS intelligent vehicle cruise control
invention and the
patent
that Mirenco developed and demonstrated several years
before the market was ready for it. This invention has simply been waiting for
the vehicle market to catch up. As it worked out, navigational information was
the first use of GPS for vehicles. The next GPS feature was talking navigational
GPS units guiding vehicle passengers to their destination. The next step will be
using GPS for managing better fuel mileage and emission reduction.
Mirenco was the first company in history to control vehicle fuel mileage and
emissions using GPS. On September 19, 1999, in conjunction with the Department
of Energy Kansas City Plant, Mirenco successfully demonstrated that it is
possible to control vehicle tailpipe emissions and fuel mileage by using
real-time GPS signals. This historic journey covered 207 miles from the DOE
plant in Kansas City to the Iowa State Capital building by a truck equipped with
a Mirenco prototype
EconoCruise
system. This demonstration of using GPS and
intelligent vehicle ‘look ahead’ electronics controlling the engine fuel
injection marked the beginning of a new era for intelligent vehicles in the
future.
On Tuesday June 19, 2001, Mirenco publicly
disclosed
this historic 207 mile journey in a national full page disclosure in both the Wall
Street Journal and USA Today. The reason for the disclosure is the fact that Mirenco did not want
any confusion at some point of time in the future about who invented this
technology. The next reason was to disclose that the technology worked perfectly
over the 207 mile demonstration having the US Department of Energy Kansas City
Plant engineer monitoring the vehicle over the entire 207 historic event as a
witness.
During 2008, oil prices hit all time highs awakening vehicle owners to the fact
they have little control over fuel cost. The only thing a vehicle owner can
control is what they drive and its fuel mileage. We believe vehicle owners will
demand intelligent vehicle cruise control technology as standard equipment in
new vehicles for both the increased fuel mileage and environmental benefits.
